You Must Know About These Ammunition Manufacturers
3 Ammo Companies More Gun Owners Should Recognize
Most well-informed gun owners are quite familiar with the dominant names in the ammunition industry. Winchester, Federal, Hornady, Remington; the same big companies produce huge ranges of effective ammo for a variety of jobs. Their products easily cover hunting, self-defense, range shooting, and much more. But I've found that when you look at the full range of ammo for sale, you may stumble across some hidden gems of the ammunition market.
At a recent gun writers' conference, I got more familiar with three of the industry's smaller players. I think these brands aren't as well-known as they deserve to be, and certain shooters will be extremely happy to find out about them.
Founded in 1982, Precision Delta operates out of Ruleville, Mississippi. I'm almost embarrassed to admit I hadn't heard of this well-established company until very recently. Maybe I can be forgiven because Precision Delta's main stock in trade is in components (e.g. bullets) rather than ready-to-shoot ammunition. The company does sell two ammo lines that cater to competitive shooters.
Precision Delta's "Performance Standard" line is made up of quality remanufactured ammunition. Cases are strictly once-fired, and the company takes great pains to confirm that every piece meets SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturer's Institute) specifications. Performance Standard ammo uses Precision Delta's match-grade bullets, and it's sold in 9mm, 45 Auto, 38 Special, 40 S&W, and 223 Remington. Pricing is reasonable (albeit not rock-bottom) and the bulk quantities are ideally suited to shooters who put in lots of time on the range.
The company also offers "Performance Pro" ammunition. This line also features Precision Delta bullets (jacketed and precision manufactured) and the highest possible production standards. These competition-suited rounds are made with new, premium brass. Performance Pro ammo is sold in 9mm, 45 Auto, 38 Special, and 40 S&W.
DoubleTap remains the brainchild of founder and president Mike McNett. Since he started producing his own 10mm ammunition in his garage, McNett has struck a nerve with shooters throughout America, and his company has expanded rapidly. DoubleTap produces significant amounts of "white label" ammunition sold under other brands, and the company's own brand enjoys a well-earned reputation for delivering power, accuracy, and reliability. Based out of Cedar City, Utah, DoubleTap Ammunition is a major player.
Today DoubleTap sells 82 different "mainstream" calibers and has 17 more exotic calibers available for special order. Customers ordering in sufficient quantity can even have customized cartridges made. DoubleTap sells casings and hard-cast bullets in addition to completed ammunition.
The company's diverse offerings fall into the following product lines:
- DT Defense: Self-defense ammunition for both handguns and rifles.
- DT Hunter: Hunting-focused cartridges for rifles and handguns.
- DT Long Range: Specialized rifle ammunition designed for maximum accuracy at greater distances.
- DT Tactical: Tactical cartridges for rifles and handguns.
- DT Safari: Heavy-duty rifle cartridges suitable for large game.
- DT Target: Focused primarily on competitive pistol shooting, this line also includes 308 and 223 rifle ammo.
DoubleTap also sells ammunition under the Colt name for the budget-conscious shooter. These cartridges come in "Defensive" and "National Match" sub-categories.
Own an STI Pistol? You'll be pleased to hear DoubleTap makes purpose-built ammunition for STI firearms.
Doubletap even produces celebrity ammunition, like the "Ted Nugent" line. And yes, it's fully approved and endorsed by the Nuge.
You're most likely to have heard the name "Desert Tech" in reference to precision sporting rifles and bullpup rifles. These popular rifles are especially useful for using a variety of different barrels and calibers on a single gun, but that's a topic for a different article.
Were you aware that Desert Tech also manufacturers precision ammunition for rifles? Their quality offerings are ideal for military, law enforcement, and competitive shooting.
According to Desert Tech's representatives, the company uses proprietary formulas and strict quality standards to deliver exceptional accuracy and consistency.
Founded in 2007 and still based in Salt Lake City, Utah, Desert Tech makes match rifle cartridges in .223 Remington, 308 Winchester, .50 BMG, 6.5 Creedmoor, .338 Lapua Magnum, and .375 CT.
Desert Tech also produces shooting accessories, training materials, and long guns like the new bullpup carbine MDR (Micro Dynamic Rifle).
Any experienced shooter develops distinct preferences when it comes to ammunition, but broadening your horizons and trying some of these companies' offerings could help you discover a brand new favorite.
